October 1, 2020: the day that's changing most of our lives. Kind of. If you fly a lot or enter military bases often, on or after October 1, 2020 your South Carolina ID (or permit or license) will no longer be your key card to get on the plane or base (or into federal buildings that require ID).
Real ID's are being issued at DMVs in South Carolina. Your Real ID will cost $25 and will require you to present the original or certified copy of your proof of identity/date of birth/US citizenship, proof of social security number, two proofs of current SC address, and documents supporting any legal name change(s). If you received your first SC beginners permit, license or ID after November of 2010, the DMV should have the documents on file.
When flying, a child under the age of 18 is not required to carry a Real ID if the adult they're flying with has one. To purchase a Real ID for a child between the ages of 5 and 16 is $5.
Good times to change your ID over include when changing your name (marriage) and when changing your address (selling/buying a home). This allows you to avoid another two hour wait at the DMV.
