Meet KC Specialty Products LLC, a locally owned and operated business led by Kris Hansen, who has been providing top-notch services in residential design, structural drafting, and custom millwork for over 25 years. Serving Arcadia Lakes, Cayce, Columbia, Lexington, and beyond, Kris brings a wealth of experience and a passion for craftsmanship to every project.

 

Q&A with the owner, Kris Hansen:

Q: Who is your ideal client? Someone who has done their homework—has a survey of the property, photos of ideas, and realistic expectations.

Q: How did you get started with your business? I started sweeping the floor in a shop at 4 years old. I grew up building. I went to college, graduated and someone taught me how to draw what I build. I then worked under a top rated home designer...the rest was history. I have been mentored by structural engineers, architects, and certified residential building designers for 20 years. Meanwhile, I'm doing historic renovation in my shop.

Q: What is your favorite thing about what you do? Literally everything, but mainly designing that minimizes waste and labor is my greatest achievement in design. I am a traditionalist to a fault. I've had builders send me pictures of the waste and say "It's a pick up truck load...not a dumpster"...but I try for "timeless" not modern unique.

Q: Where did you grow up? I moved 27 times by the time I was 15. Montana to Florida. My mid 20's I found Chapin SC around '98...I call "Lake Murray" Home.

Q: What is the process for clients to have you complete a project for their home? I have an intro sheet and checklist. No two are the same. I'm 100% custom. My process has a 97% success rate. the 3% was unforeseeable circumstances.

Q: How do you charge for your projects? Kris: It depends—hourly or by square foot. I work to be cost-effective for both parties and discuss everything upfront.

Q: What is your favorite project that you have done? I have several favorites—I'll send photos and plans upon request.

Q: What did you do before this? "I can Fix it" started it all, but building stuff is in my blood.
